The Etiwanda Fire is burning in the Etiwanda Preserve on the outskirts of Rancho Cucamonga, a community of 180,000 in San Bernardino County. The wind driven fire started at 8:00 am and has grown quickly to hundreds of acres. Because of high winds air support is unavailable. This looks like a multi day event as winds are projected to be sustained at over 20 knots for the next 36 hours minimum.
Without the aid of air support fire personnel on the ground are pretty much reduced to working spots in housing subdivisions. This is a classic Santa Ana wind event in an area with a proven track record of widespread wildfire destruction. Citizens in the path would be advised to heed all evacuation warnings.
*The wind at Ontario airport is so extreme an Alaska Airline pilot aborted his landing and opted for LAX.
