You can call this a fire tornado but it has an eye like a hurricane. A series of images from the RAMSDIS weather satellite animated image loop showed this phenomenon occurring at 6:45 pm PST over the BTU-Lightning Complex fires this evening July 8.

Everyone who has battled a wildfire has seen fire whirls but one visible from space belongs in a special category. I confess I don’t know the correct terminology for this. What I do know is this event is taking place over the communities of Magalia, Concow and Paradise California.
